Recap of CANDE activities at CIES 2016

CANDE was busy at CIES this year. We had nine panels and two highlighted sessions with more than 150 attendees. In addition, we cosponsored our first pre-conference workshop entitled “Theoretical Dilemmas of Democratic Citizenship Education Research in Non-Western Contexts”. The workshop was organized and hosted by Drs. Serhiy Kovalchuk and Anatoli Rapoport who crafted a wonderful session with more than 25 participants. As a result of this success, we will be planning another pre-conference workshop for the 2017 meeting, so stay tuned for details.

We also co-sponsored the Open Society’s Film Festivalette, which showed the films La Cour be Babel and Present Tense, among others that dealt powerfully with themes of citizenship, democracy and education. Lastly, we hosted our first annual CANDE happy hour, which gave our members a chance to meet and chat informally. We are happy to share that this will be a recurring event as well.

At our Business meeting, we discussed staggering the SIG leadership’s transition to help preserve continuity between the co-chairs and ensure a smooth transition. In addition, we added to the leadership team the position of secretary, who will disseminate information to members, write business meeting minutes and manage our list-serve. We also added the position of web coordinator, who will maintain our website, coordinate the dissemination of information on various platforms, and develop our web presence.
