The CANDE SIG is pleased to announce its annual CANDE Outstanding Paper Award (established about a decade ago in collaboration with Judith Torney-Purta). This award seeks to recognize the work of early career scholars who have successfully submitted an unpublished paper to the CIES conference on issues related to education, democracy, and citizenship.

The CANDE SIG is pleased to announce its annual CANDE Outstanding Paper Award (established about a decade ago in collaboration with Judith Torney-Purta). This award seeks to recognize the work of early career scholars who have successfully submitted an unpublished paper to the CIES conference on issues related to education, democracy, and citizenship.
Why apply?
- This is an opportunity for networking and access to senior scholars.
- Awardee(s) are recognized at the CANDE SIG’s annual business meeting (held during the CIES annual conference), and provide a brief presentation to SIG members.
- Dr. Torney-Purta graciously provides a small honorarium for the prize as part of her ongoing mentoring and encouragement of early career scholars.
Who can apply?
- This award is open to master’s students, doctoral students/candidates, and individuals who have completed their doctorates within the past five years.
- Only papers that have been accepted for presentation at the CIES Conference can be considered.
How to apply?
- We ask that you submit:
- a full manuscript of your accepted CIES paper (submissions of power point slides alone will not be considered)
- a statement of eligibility (i.e., 1) status and/or year of completion of master’s degree or doctorate; and, 2) associated university).
- Please make the submission to the CANDE SIG Chair: Nicole Webster ([email protected]).
- The full submission (of paper and statement of eligibility) should be made no later than March 18th, 2022.

2021 Outstanding Paper Award
The Citizenship and Democratic Education Special Interest Group of the Comparative and International Education Society is pleased to announce that Diego Carrasco and Erika Kessler were the recipients of the 2021 CANDE Outstanding Paper Award.
Erika Kessler’s award winning manuscript was titled, “Climate Change Concern Among Youth: The Unexamined Role of Civics Education and Institutional Trust in Elevating Cross-national Climate Change Risk Perceptions”. The second set of winners were Diego Carrasco and Andrés Pavón. The title of their award-winning paper was “Tolerance of corruption among students in Latin America”. The annual award, established by Dr. Judith Torney-Purta, recognizes the work of early career scholars who have successfully submitted an unpublished paper to the CIES Conference on issues related to education, democracy, and citizenship. Diego and Erika was honored at the CANDE SIG Business Meeting of the vCIES Conference.
